In collaborative research, the collaborators should have the opportunity to work with you in this process. The level of involvement that collaborators want to have is extremely variable – some may simply confirm that they are happy with the general topic and leave the details up to you, whereas others will want to get thoroughly involved. 2 Instructions: how to refine and focus the research topic • • • • If the topic is new to you, read some introductory books or articles. Once you know enough to generate ideas for your own research, draft a title (or a few alternative titles) and aim(s) to discuss with your supervisor or manager.

Inferential statistics go further than this and calculate the probability that patterns in the data collected from one or more samples reflect something more than chance variation and tell us something meaningful about the wider world. They can be used to estimate the characteristics of a population from data collected on a sample, or to compare two or more samples (or sub-sets within a sample), or to see if there is a significant relationship between two or more different variables. It is not possible in a single chapter to include step-by-step instructions on exactly how to do each test (but suggestions are made for further reading); rather, the chapters set out some of the underlying principles and then give a systematic run-down of the most commonly used tests in social science research.

Many of these methods were first developed as part of RRA techniques, but they have come to be known as PRA methods. PRA has been criticized in its turn for the level of control that is exerted by researchers – especially in a community workshop setting – and the lack of true empowerment of local people (for example, Cooke and Kothari, 2001; Cornwall and Hickey and Mohan, 2004; Mosse, 2005; Pratt, 2003; Twyman, 2000).
