However, there has been controversy in recent years about the binding of copper to metallothionein (Bremner 1979) and consequently some preliminary comments on the identification of this protein are merited. Copper-metallothioneins have been isolated from the liver, kidneys and intestine of several species. They have been characterized by their molecular weight, absorption spectra, metal content and amino acid composition. They have a cysteine content of about 30Y0, they usually contain about 1 Yo leucine and isoleucine and they do not contain aromatic acids.
