It would be better if more philosophers came into this field; but until they do literary people will have to try to clear the undergrowth for their own enquiries. 3 But we need much more varied work in contemporary cultural sociology. We need enquiries into such questions as: (a) About writers and artists: Where do they come from? How do they become what they are? What are their financial rewards? ) (b) What are the audiences for different forms and what the audiences for different levels of approach?

The educational press (still following Ortega y Gasset) talks about ‘your common man’ and ‘the masses’ as though these were well-defined terms rather than conditioned gestures. Most of the discussion of conformity, status, class, ‘Americanization’, mass art, pop art, folk art, urban art and the rest is simply too thin. They are often confused and baffled; they despise without understanding and feel like keepers in the museum of high but irrelevant art, training a few in the next generation to be keepers in their turn.
